Mark Shield & Matthew BreezeFootball Federation Australia (FFA) and Zurich Australia today announced that the financial services company's successful multi-million dollar sponsorship of the Hyundai A-League football competition will continue for a further three years to the end of the 2010-2011 Season.

Zurich Australia's sponsorship includes the Hyundai A-League match officials and FFA's new Referee Development Program.

"We are delighted to announce that our partnership with our good friends at Zurich Australia has been extended for a further three seasons," said FFA CEO Ben Buckley.

"Zurich was one of the first companies to join the then fledgling A-League competition in 2005 and they showed enormous confidence in the new competition, as well as an understanding of the importance of referees to the game.

"The Hyundai A-League is now an established part of the Australian sporting landscape and people such as David Smith and his team at Zurich Australia have helped contribute to this success," concluded Buckley.

Zurich Australia Chief Executive, David Smith, said that football has always been a good strategic fit for Zurich.

"We had ambitious growth plans when we set out with FFA, and we continue to have a strong appetite to profitably grow the Zurich business in Australia and New Zealand.

"Our growth aspirations continue to sit well with the fast growing sport of football and with the ongoing success of the Hyundai A-League."

The new partnership has been expanded to include the Referee Development Program, a key component of FFA's National Football Development Plan.

"It is important that football is able to attract, educate and retain referees and the Referee Development Program is critical to this," said Buckley.

"Zurich's support for the Program will assist us in providing education and skills development to referees across all levels of the game and, in particular, help us to grow and improve the quantity and quality of referees working at grassroots level also."

The first round of the Hyundai A-League 2008-09 season will kick off on Friday 15 August featuring the 2008 Grand Final re-match and local derby between reigning champions the Newcastle Jets and the defending premiers the Central Coast Mariners.

The rivalry continues on Saturday 16 August when Sydney FC host Melbourne Victory, while Sunday 17 August sees the Queensland Roar travel across the ditch to New Zealand to face the Wellington Phoenix, and Adelaide United hosts Perth Glory to complete the opening round.
